Before Yokai Watch scarey yokai (spirits) became kawaii because of Shjigeru Mizuki who drew yokai manga.
Mr. Mizuki’s birthplace, Sakai-minato-shi, Tottori Pref. is now like a theme park for yokais. If you visit this city, you can meet figures of yokais he drew, not only in alleys but also in shops and even small police stations.
In his hometown of Sakaiminato, MIzuki Shigeru Road from the JR Station to Honmachi Arcade features bronze statues of more than 150 characters from Shigeru Mizuki’s masterpiece, GeGeGe no Kitaro, which depicts the world of supernatural monsters known as Yokai!

Shigeru Mizuki died last year, and kept creating his art until his untimely death from complications from a fall. Some say he must have been a yokai himself.
