Haneda Arrival

Haneda Arrival
Haneda Airport at Tokyo is generally the close-in domestic flight center for the city. There are international flights there that go in and out of a separate international terminal (?perhaps the old building? as the domestic terminal is much larger and nicer).

The main advantage of Haneda is the close proximity to the city (the international airport at Narita isn't even in Tokyo), but there are some disadvantages for international arrivals.
For flights from HNL, arrival is usually late at night. A common strategy, and ours, is for an overnight stay at a nearby hotel. We stayed at the Keikyu EX Haneda at Ota, just across the Ebitori River from the international terminal at Haneda. There is a free shuttle to and from the hotel that worked very well for us. (Actually, there is a rail station just across the river from the hotel, but we opted to shuttle back to the airport to go to the JR office there.)
Besides the free shuttle, there is a free breakfast where you can choose a Japanese or Western style breakfast. There is a nice eating area with a view of the airport.

What has been your experience flying in and out of Haneda?

  1. We usually the Keikyu train straight to Shinagawa. Usually stay overnight at the Prince hotel.

  2. Warren Naguwa That's a good plan too.
We are longtime Keikyu riders from our Yokohama days, and I still think it's cool that the Keikyu airport line joins (and splits going the other way) the train from Yokohama and then morphs into the Asakusa subway line underground. But for getting to Tokyo Station, that means you would have to walk a little more from the subway, so changing at Shinagawa to JR is a better fit if you are going to the Yaesu Shinkansen gates.

  3. A disadvantage of Haneda is that the international terminal is secondary, and immigration and the JR Service Center is smaller and slower than Narita (or Tokyo for Rail Pass exchange).
We opted to stay at Haneda as a lower risk and cost in our situation. The last Keikyu train is about midnight, so if there is a flight or immigration delay, you may have less than an hour to catch the last train.
This is the JR Service Center at Haneda International Terminal. The line was about 4 times longer before that door, and moved slowly.

  4. Now they tell us. ๐Ÿคจ ๐Ÿ˜
Note, though, that the Shinagawa JR Center opens at 9 am, whereas the Tokyo Station one opens at 730 am, so if you want an early start, you would have to wait or pay out of pocket for the first leg.

  5. This is one step above the standard double. Didn't want to be too constrained with all our stuff arriving near midnight.
