Dojo Sukui Manju
I got these manju at Marukai at one of their regional road shows. They looked kind of cute, vaguely familiar, and I thought the boys might like them.
It turns out that the character is vaguely familiar because it comes from a classic traditional comical dance called Dojo Sukui (scooping loaches), and sometimes a mask is used. The manju is in the form of the mask or dancer's face.
The dance, and another called Yasugibushi, and manju are from Yasugi in Shimane Prefecture. Shimane is north of Hiroshima on the Sea of Japan.
Have you seen Dojo Sukui or the manju?
