Japan Rail Pass
A bargain for those traveling long distances while visiting Japan.
This usually refers to the national pass which covers the whole country and works with all 6 railroads which are part of the JR Group.
The separate railroad companies have their own regional passes which cost less than the whole country pass. If a visit will be confined to just one region, a regional pass may be a good idea. There seem to be recent changes that divide regions into smaller areas, i.e. more restricted routes that a pass is good for.

Some regional passes can be used for a number of days within a longer defined period of time (e.g. 5 days of your choosing within a 14 day period).
Has anyone used a regional rail pass?
What was that experience like?
