In preparing for and while staying in Japan in the past, I found the Japan Times (English edition) to be a useful resource to get some feel for and information from the Japanese perspective. A good and comfortable read for those of us used to our own familiar local and national newspapers.
Of interest for travelers would be the Culture and Restaurants and City Guide sections. Heck, all of it is interesting. Just learned in Sports that Ichiro is 1 hit away from tying Pete Rose's major league career hit record.
