On Being There

On Being There
I think this speaks to what I generally feel. That is, famous landmarks and attractions are interesting, but what I enjoy and appreciate most is just being there and absorbing the ambiance of the place. Especially if I can spend several days in a place and get familiar with the lay of the land and the character of the place, that is when I enjoy the experience the most.

What do you think?

Simple Japanese railway scene

I love Japan, and between trips sometimes I feel that I miss its ambiance. With that feeling, I selected for today this very simple photo, taken in Katsushika, Tokyo, without any landmark in sight, because this common Japanese landscape is what I remember the most when I’m home. Looking forward to visit it again…

  1. I feel the same way, so usually in the morning I go scouting around the hotel. This way I can see what the surrounding area looks like and all the shops and restaurants located

  2. Warren Naguwa Good to hear that. In my younger days, my MO on traveling anywhere was to go out on a run as soon as practical to scout out the neighborhood and yes, where the food is, and then to walk about exploring more over time. Urban Japan is not real conducive to running, which is OK since those days are long past for me.
