Suica Card

Suica Card
How To

The major IC transportation smartcards are essentially interchangeable.
Suica = JR East
Pasmo = Tokyo city transportation
Icoca = JR West

There is a 500¥ deposit that decreases your working total. Refunds minus a service fee can be done only at the issuing system (not a problem if you arrive and leave from the same region).

The IC cards began to be accepted for the Kyoto bus system relatively recently. If you plan to use the bus in Kyoto, there is a day pass that is worth it if you take more than 3 rides. Depends where you want to go in Kyoto -- if rail goes closeby, it would probably be a better choice, but rail doesn't go everywhere. Bus center right in front of Kyoto Station.

  1. One place that a Suica card cannot be used is in Hiroshima on the Hiroden streetcar. From Hiroshima Station, the usual route to the Peace Memorial Park is by streetcar to Genbaku Dome-mae and walk to the museum. JR West Icoca cards can be used on the streetcar, but Suica cards cannot.

    To get to Miyajima, you can take the JR Ferry from Miyajimaguchi, or the fast Aquanet boat from the Peace Park.
