Ushi No Hi
This year is one of those years when there are 2 Ushi no Hi or summer unagi days.
The sad truth is that the unagi is disappearing in Japan and worldwide. Unagi is unusual in that although it is a freshwater eel, it has a salt-water phase in early life. The life-cycle is so complex, that true farming through the whole life cycle is too difficult, and young glass eels as they are called at that stage are caught to be raised as "farmed" unagi.

So on this Unagi Day, enjoy it while you still can. Like many other things today, it may be harder to come by as time passes.
[food, hmm, Japan, custom]
