It Exists!!
Although it's much more common than in previous years, diet Coke is rare to see in Japan. Interestingly, Coke Zero is more common than diet Coke (actually Coke Light). Caffeine free diet Coke is very rare but does exist.
We found this in one supermarket during our time there.
(Similarly, decaf coffee is quite rare as well. The Japanese like their drinks strong.)
