Dojo Sukui Manju

Dojo Sukui Manju I got these manju at Marukai at one of their regional road shows. They looked kind of cute, vaguely familiar, and I thought the boys might like them. It turns out that the character is vaguely familiar because it comes from a classic traditional comical dance called Dojo Sukui (scooping loaches), and sometimes a mask is used. The manju is in the form of the mask or dancer's face. The dance, and another called Yasugibushi, and manju are from Yasugi in Shimane Prefecture. Shimane is north of Hiroshima on the Sea of Japan. Umeda

Umeda [link, travel, Osaka, Japan] Originally shared by Lili Florea (Muza-chan) Umeda cityscape 150 years ago, the Umeda district in Osaka was a rural area, but today, it has the highest concentration of high-rise buildings in the city. The best place to admire the area is the open air observatory on top of the Umeda Sky Building, which is located a bit away from the skyscraper concentration, far enough to offer a good perspective over the cityscape. It is known also as "Little Kyoto in Aki" (former name of Hiroshima), but it has become a little hard to see the connection in modern times. If you're in the area then it's well worth a look at the historic district. This city well known between domestic tourists, who take tours around the area and sample the local specialty foods, bamboo shoots and Japanese sake, but foreign tourists are very rare here. The city had its beginnings as the site of a manor for Kyoto's Shimogamo Shrine in the Heian period.
