Dojo Sukui Manju

Dojo Sukui Manju I got these manju at Marukai at one of their regional road shows. They looked kind of cute, vaguely familiar, and I thought the boys might like them. It turns out that the character is vaguely familiar because it comes from a classic traditional comical dance called Dojo Sukui (scooping loaches), and sometimes a mask is used. The manju is in the form of the mask or dancer's face. The dance, and another called Yasugibushi, and manju are from Yasugi in Shimane Prefecture. Shimane is north of Hiroshima on the Sea of Japan. Petites Gaufres

Petites Gaufres So we lifted one of these little (actually large) wafers from Rob's box to sample. Nice crisp, light, wafers that sandwich a smear of mildly sweet flavored cream filling. Seems like a very Japanese take of a French confection that would go well with tea. A little search reveals that this particular confectioner, Fugetsu-Do, is a traditional bakery with a long (115 years) history in Motomachi in Kobe. http://fugetsudo-kobe.jp/en/ Their gaufres are perhaps the most well known? There is another Fugetsudo in Ueno in Tokyo that may be related to the Kobe one as the logo of a crescent on a fan is the same? Mobile WiFi

Mobile WiFi File this under how markedly things have changed since the first time we traveled to Japan, and how technology makes travel so much easier now. Although we did pretty well last trip using our free data on T-Mobile for communication and navigation, using the mobile Wifi hotspots brought by some of us, and adding the mobile hotspots provided by the AirBnb owners added much flexibility and redundancy. This most recent time we tried using iVideo mobile Wifi and overall had a good experience with it. (There are other mobile Wifi providers, and please share your experience if you've used them.) We arranged the rental before leaving home, and as advertised the package was waiting for us upon check in at the first hotel. We used the popular Softbank 4G LTE device and it generally worked well.
