Nagano

Nagano
A city and a prefecture in the central alps area between eastern and western Japan. Known for the 1968 Winter Olympics, it is a medium sized comfortable city in the summer accessible by Shinkansen from Tokyo.
The large Zenkoji Buddhist Temple, around which the town was built in the 7th century, is of great historical significance. Much of the interior can be viewed for a fee, but not the first Buddhist statue brought into Japan when Buddhism was first introduced in the 6th century which it houses. It is easily accessible by bus from Nagano Station.

Well worth a visit, and without the pressing crowds and bazaar atmosphere of Sensoji in Asakusa, Tokyo.
We enjoyed our visit to Nagano. Have you been there? What did you think?

  1. Stayed at the Tokyu REI Hotel across from the station. It has an underground passage to the station basement level which may come in handy in the wintertime.
