お手洗い (おてあらい otearai)

While still a very traditional society, many things including technology change relatively quickly in Japan. One noticeable change from the first times I visited Japan and Asia (over about 20 years or so) is restroom facilities.

Whereas way back then it was very common to encounter old style straddle toilets, especially in places like old train stations, today it is unusual to see one in public areas. In fact I think this was the only one I noticed this year.

Note the thoughtful instructions for both styles. Remember for either that used tissue does not go into the trash can. 😏
