ビール
Sapporo is the oldest beer brand in Japan.
In a reverse of the common story of a German brewmaster overseeing the beginning of brewing in Asia, Seibei Nakagawa left Japan at the age of 17 at a time when doing so was strictly forbidden. His travels eventually led him to Germany where he learned the craft of brewing, a craft he would apply back home in 1876 as Sapporo’s first brewmaster.

And in the early 1900s, Japan (Hokkaido) was second only to the U.S. in canning salmon.

As elsewhere, that industry has markedly declined in recent times.
