Japanese Year Dates
Recording of dates in Japan commonly use the serial year of the era of the emperor during that time. I believe the month and day conform to the western calendar convention (please correct me if that is wrong). So for example, my high school class graduated in Showa 38 (S38). The current years are in the Heisei period, and this year 2018 is H30.
Perhaps that may be slowly changing, as Japanese Drivers' Licenses will now show the western year for birth dates, but I don't think the traditional system will go away any time soon.
There is a useful conversion chart at:> http://www.ewc.co.jp/Pages/Information/CalendarEN.aspx
