J-ALERT transmitters receive information and relay it nationwide in the form of:
announcements from speakers mounted on towers and buildings
alerts on TVs and radios
push alerts on mobile phones
The “NHK World TV” app on iOS and Android can receive alerts from the J-ALERT emergency broadcast system, but receiving is on an “opt in” basis.
If traveling to Japan, it would be wise to install the NHK World TV app on your phone, and set Notification Settings ON for Earthquake, Tsunami, and Breaking News.
