Ghibli Museum

Ghibli Museum
Mitaka

Ghibli Museum, Mitaka was planned by Japan's top animated film director, Hayao Miyazaki, famous for "Spirited Away", "Princess Mononoke", "My Neighbor Totoro", and "Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea", and is managed by Tokuma Memorial Culture Foundation for Animation; Kiyofumi Nakajima, Managing Director.
The museum has a permanent exhibit on the history and techniques of animation. You can see Totoro's Cat Bus, a process of making animation films and an original short film which can be seen only in the museum theater. The museum itself is like a maze and is whimsically designed in the distinct style of the studio's films. Many of their famous characters are there, including a life-sized robot from Castle in the Sky on the rooftop garden. "Let's Lose Our Way, Together" is the concept of the museum. If you are a fan of Japanese Anime, or you travel with your family, you must visit Ghibli Museum.

For anyone interested in visiting this museum, note that admission tickets are hard to come by, and advance planning is necessary. It looks like they are sold 3 months ahead of date and sell out quickly. e.g. all sold out through January 2019. Next release 1 November.

Probably the best way to score a ticket from this side of the ocean is to get them online from JTB. JTB has offices in Honolulu, Los Angeles, and New York, but they have to be ordered online. Only available to non-residents of Japan.

A cool way to visit is via the Ghibli Museum & Ghibli Film Appreciation Bus Tour which leaves from Shinjuku and makes 3 Ghibli related stops including the museum.
