Hokokuji

Hokokuji
This reminds me that Kamakura and the surrounding area is a wonderful place to visit. It is famous as the home of the Daibutsu, but there is so much more in a beautiful setting of hills and valleys facing the sea.
It is a doable day trip from Tokyo, and an easy day trip from Yokohama. Kamakura always strikes me as someplace I would like to stay a few days and take the time to explore it more. I think a good strategy would be a 2 or 3 day (or easily more) side trip from Tokyo to include Yokohama and Kamakura.

Kamakura has many, many temples and shrines.
With no less than 65 Buddhist temples and 19 Shinto shrines, set in a dramatic natural amphitheater amongst woods on three sides and the sea taking centre stage, Kamakura, a populous resort town and historic center, makes for a great day trip from nearby Tokyo...

You can get a map of the shrines and temples at the visitors center, and also information about bus routes to them.

One of my favorite places in Japan.

There are lots of beautiful temples and shrines to visit in the Japanese city of Kamakura. But there's something particularly special about this one - Hokokuji.

With the bamboo forest as the backdrop, you can sit in this charming teahouse while you drink a cup of authentic Japanese tea and try some local sweets.

  1. If I remember correctly, our friend and guide Yoko Okazaki (who took us to Kamakura, Enoshima, and the Miura peninsula with Hajime Nagano) told us about the temples and shrines and showed us the map, and we returned on a later day trip to explore further.
