Fall Travel

Fall Travel
From a recent discussion about fall travel in Japan.
For autumn leaves and koyo, the time and region are important.
As the first image shows, this year at the end of October and beginning of November, the leaves are already fallen in Hokkaido, while in Tokyo it hasn't begun to turn yet.
There are annual predictions by location that can help.

The second image is the apps that I think are currently most useful in general. Both the Japan Travel Navitime and the Japan Official JNTO app are good in general, and both have a tab for rail travel scheduling (I think both use the Navitime rail information system). Either of those, along with Google Maps, which also gives you rail scheduling, are good for daily and on the go navigating.
The NHK World app is useful for news, and potentially most importantly, it and the Official JNTO app give you notification in English of emergency announcements (e.g. earthquake and tsunami).

What apps and aids have you found to be most useful?

  1. Fall foliage forecasts are helpful, and perhaps more helpful shorter term (especially for those in country) are foliage reports.
This is one site for that.

Today is considered mid-season for this year.
The season is ending in Northern Japan.
    Nikko is just past peak.
    Mt. Fuji is at peak.
Tokyo and Kyoto are still green.
